Overview

Hamasaki Coast is a shallow, white-sand beach in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, next to Niji no Matsubara. It is known for its open scenery and for being easy to enjoy both for swimming and for walking. In summer, it opens as Hamasaki Beach, attracting many beachgoers, and surfing, windsurfing, and other water sports can also be seen.

Getting There

Take the JR Chikuhi Line, not the JR Karatsu Line, to Hamasaki Station; the coast is about a 5- to 10-minute walk away. By car, it is about 5 minutes from the Hamasaki Interchange on the Nishi-Kyushu Expressway (formerly the Nijo Hamasaki Road).

Highlights

It borders Niji no Matsubara, one of Japan’s Three Great Pine Groves, creating a striking contrast between the coast and the pine forest. The beach is flat with fine white sand, making it ideal for swimming and leisurely walks. In summer, there are beach houses, free showers, and parking, making it highly convenient. The swimming area and water sports area are clearly separated, and surfing and windsurfing are commonly seen.

Families may want to visit when the waves are calmer and pay attention to the designated swimming area. Free showers, toilets, and parking are available nearby, making it suitable for a half-day trip or a combined visit with Niji no Matsubara.
