Overview

Deep within Wuling Farm, the forest sings through maple leaves, pine woods, waterfalls, and the Formosan landlocked salmon, creating the area’s most memorable image. It is Taiwan’s third national forest recreation area, about a four-hour drive from Taipei. At an elevation of around 1,800 meters, it is very cold because of descending mountain air. The area’s most iconic attraction is Taoshan Waterfall Trail. The quiet stands of two-needle pine along the way and the rich forest ecology are major highlights. Taiwan macaques, Mikado pheasants, Taiwan bamboo partridges, and vinaceous rosefinches are frequent visitors here. At the trail’s end, the powerful waters and mist of Taoshan Waterfall are breathtaking, and the abundant negative ions provide a soothing experience for travelers. From Wuling Suspension Bridge, visitors can also view the national treasure fish in Qijiawan Creek—the Formosan landlocked salmon. In autumn, the red leaves of Taiwan sweetgum and green maples, along with cherry blossoms in spring, are beautiful seasonal features of Wuling National Forest Recreation Area, making it an unmissable destination in the Wuling region. Taiwan macaques are frequently seen in Wuling National Forest Recreation Area. To reduce human-monkey conflict, please follow the four rules: 1. Do not feed them. Feeding lowers macaques’ wariness of people, which may lead them to snatch human food and endanger safety. Feeding also changes their natural behavior and ecology, increasing conflict with people. 2. Do not touch them. Avoid contact with macaques to reduce the risk of shared diseases such as Herpes B virus, rabies, and gastrointestinal parasites. If a macaque jumps onto you, do not panic, scream, or wave it away; calmly leave the spot and the macaque will depart on its own. 3. Do not disturb or provoke them. Do not stare, tease, provoke, or let children wander off alone, to reduce human-monkey conflict. 4. Do not expose food. Snacks, fruit, drinks, or any strongly scented food should be put inside your backpack and not held in your hand. Do not open your backpack in front of macaques, to reduce conflicts over food taking.

Highlights

Located on a high-mountain valley plateau at the border of Heping District in Taichung City and Datong Township in Yilan County, this area sits at an elevation of about 1,800 meters and is surrounded by peaks such as Xueshan, Pintian Mountain, Qiyou Mountain, and Taoshan. With spectacular scenery and fresh air, it is a national forest recreation area that combines high-mountain forests, waterfalls, and valley landscapes. In spring, visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms; in summer, it is ideal for escaping the heat and taking forest baths; in autumn, maple leaves and red foliage create vivid colors; in winter, frost and snow are often seen in the mountains. Each season has its own charm, making it a popular destination for travelers who love mountains, forests, and natural ecology. The park features high-mountain forest vegetation such as two-needle pine, fir, and hemlock, as well as varied terrain including waterfalls, streams, and cliffs. Its original natural scenery has been well preserved, making it suitable for hiking, birdwatching, waterfall viewing, and ecological observation. Qijiawan Creek nurtures the national treasure fish, the Formosan landlocked salmon. Combined with the Taiwan macaques, Mikado pheasants, Taiwan bamboo partridges, and vinaceous rosefinches commonly seen in the park, it serves as an iconic high-mountain ecological classroom in Taiwan. Because cold mountain air sinks, the perceived temperature remains low even at an elevation of about 1,800 meters. It is especially cold in the mornings, evenings, and during winter, so adequate warm clothing is necessary.

What to See

1. Taoshan Waterfall Trail: The trail winds through quiet stands of two-needle pine, with beautiful forest scenery and moderate ups and downs. It is one of the park’s most representative hiking routes, and along the way visitors can observe diverse forest ecology and high-mountain vegetation. At the end of the trail, Taoshan Waterfall surges powerfully with mist filling the air. The waterfall is majestic and spectacular, and the surrounding negative ions create a relaxing atmosphere, making it a popular place for photos and cooling off. 2. Wuling Suspension Bridge and Qijiawan Creek: The Wuling Suspension Bridge spans the valley with open views, overlooking the clear waters of Qijiawan Creek and the surrounding mountains and forests, making it an excellent place for sightseeing and photography. At designated viewing areas and during suitable seasons, visitors may be able to observe the Formosan landlocked salmon in Qijiawan Creek from the bridge or nearby interpretive points, experiencing the beauty of this national treasure fish’s habitat. 3. High-mountain forests and primeval forest scenery: The park contains fir, hemlock, and other high-mountain coniferous and broadleaf forests, forming a lush primeval forest landscape. Clouds and mist often move through the valleys, creating a quiet and mysterious atmosphere. Multiple trails and interpretive routes are available, allowing visitors to walk while learning about high-mountain ecology and changes in forest composition. It is ideal for travelers who enjoy slow-paced nature exploration. 4. Birdwatching and wildlife observation points: Taiwan macaques are commonly seen in the park, which is also an excellent place to observe rare birds such as Mikado pheasants, Taiwan bamboo partridges, and vinaceous rosefinches. Early morning and evening are the best times for observation. Some trail sections include ecological interpretation signs reminding visitors to keep their distance, not feed animals, and avoid disturbing wildlife so that they can maintain natural behavior. 5. Seasonal mountain scenery: Spring: cherry blossoms bloom, and with the high-mountain mist, the pink floral scenery becomes a highlight for photography and flower viewing. Summer: the climate is relatively cool, making it a good time for forest bathing, escaping the heat, hiking, and water-friendly activities. Autumn: Taiwan sweetgum, green maple, and other species turn orange-red and crimson, creating layered maple scenery in the valleys and making this a famous maple-viewing destination. Winter: temperatures are low, and the mountains may occasionally have frost or snow, presenting a completely different high-mountain atmosphere together with the tranquil forest setting.

Travel Tips

1. Best time to visit and suggested itinerary: Spring (around February to April) is ideal for cherry blossoms and fresh green mountain scenery, suitable for leisurely flower viewing and light hiking. Summer is cool and comfortable, making it a popular season for escaping the heat, forest bathing, and waterfall visits. A half-day to one-day hike such as Taoshan Waterfall Trail is recommended. Autumn is the most beautiful time for maple leaves and red foliage, ideal for photography and sightseeing. Since the area is crowded during peak periods, transportation and accommodation should be arranged early. Winter is cold and may bring low temperatures, frost, or even snow in the mountains, so complete cold-weather gear and road-condition checks are necessary. 2. Warm clothing and equipment: Although the elevation is about 1,800 meters, descending cold mountain air makes mornings and evenings feel noticeably cold, especially in winter and at dawn, so warm jackets, hats, and gloves are essential. For hiking, anti-slip trekking shoes or hiking shoes are recommended. Trails in the mountains may be wet or muddy, so during the rainy season bring rain gear, a waterproof jacket, and a waterproof backpack cover. For longer outdoor activities, bring water, simple trail snacks, sunscreen, and any personal medications. 3. Transportation and access (general): Driving requires travel on mountain roads, and the journey is long. Check vehicle condition in advance, monitor road conditions, and allow enough driving time because mountain roads have many curves. You can also take a bus to the Lishan or Wuling Farm area and then transfer to a shuttle or reserved transport service. It is recommended to check the latest schedules and routes in advance. 4. Safety and monkey etiquette: Taiwan macaques are frequently seen in the park, so be sure to follow the four rules: - Do not feed them: this prevents macaques from losing their caution around people, helps avoid snatching or aggressive behavior, and reduces changes to their natural foraging habits. - Do not touch them: keep your distance, do not reach out to touch them, and do not take close selfies with macaques to avoid shared disease risks. If a macaque jumps onto you, stay calm and slowly leave the area; the macaque will leave naturally. - Do not disturb or provoke them: do not stare, tease, frighten, or chase them, and make sure children do not wander off alone to reduce the chance of conflict. - Do not expose food: snacks, fruit, drinks, and similar items should not be held in your hand or left visible. Put them in your backpack and avoid opening the backpack in front of macaques so as not to attract them. 5. Ecological conservation and visitor etiquette: Please follow park regulations: do not feed wild animals, do not break flowers or branches, and do not pick up or remove natural objects, so the original forest ecology can be protected. Open fires, barbecues, and careless use of fire are strictly prohibited in the mountains to prevent forest fires; smokers must follow designated areas and related regulations. When using trails, stay on marked routes and do not leave the trail or enter closed areas, to ensure your own safety and protect natural resources. 6. Hiking and physical fitness assessment: Although Taoshan Waterfall Trail is a popular route, it is still a high-mountain hike. Plan according to your own fitness level, do not rush, and remember to hydrate and rest along the way. If you have cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, or are not accustomed to high altitude, consult a physician in advance and slow your pace in the mountains while paying attention to your physical condition. 7. Accommodation and reservations (general advice): Many travelers combine Wuling Farm or nearby accommodation for a two-day, one-night or longer itinerary to avoid fatigue and enjoy the morning and evening scenery at a relaxed pace. During cherry blossom season and peak maple season, there are often large crowds, so accommodations and transportation should be booked early, and visitors should pay attention to official notices regarding entry or vehicle restrictions.
