Overview
Doumen Ancient Trail is a newer mountain route for climbing Mount Taiwu. Because it was once under military control, the trail has retained a relatively untouched natural landscape, with open views and rich ecology along the way. The trailhead is near Doumen at the foot of Mount Taiwu, and the endpoint is the place where Zheng Chenggong watched military drills and played chess. Although the total length is only about 1 kilometer, the steep ascent makes it far from easy, and one section is carved into a steep granite outcrop, adding a sense of rugged adventure.
Highlights
Doumen Ancient Trail is a short, steep historic trail to Mount Taiwu that combines natural ecology with a military-history atmosphere. The route preserves the relatively untouched environment of the military-control era, offers wide views, and allows visitors to enjoy Kinmen’s mountain-and-sea scenery as well as rich forests and wildlife.
What to See
1. Doumen Ancient Trail Trailhead: The trailhead is located at the northern foothills of Mount Taiwu, near Doumen, and serves as the starting point of the shortest of the four routes up Mount Taiwu. Near the entrance, large rocks engraved with phrases such as “Mount Taiwu Ancient Trail Trailhead” can be seen, making it easy to identify. The surrounding area is mostly farmland and village scenery. 2. Granite-Carved Trail and Steps: A section of the trail is directly carved into steep granite and gneiss bedrock, forming steps and footholds that create a strong hiking feel with a slightly dramatic character. To avoid damaging the original landscape, some sections are paved with granite stones, while others use the exposed bedrock itself. The footing is solid, but hikers should still watch for steep grades and slippery surfaces. 3. Forest and Ecological Scenery: The main vegetation along the route consists of casuarina, masson pine, Litsea glutinosa, and acacia, mixed with various shrubs and rare plants native to Kinmen. In summer, the sounds of cicadas and birds create a quiet, natural atmosphere. Because of past military restrictions and relatively few visitors, the area has preserved a more primitive ecological environment, and a wide variety of wildlife can often be observed. In some seasons, birds such as the blue-tailed bee-eater may also be seen from a distance. 4. Foothills of Mount Taiwu and Scenic Views: Although the trail is only about 1 kilometer long, it climbs steadily upward and offers open views at many points. Visitors can look out over farmland, villages, and coastal scenery, and appreciate Mount Taiwu’s role as a landmark of Kinmen. Different turns reveal different landscapes, including broad stretches of farmland and the contrast between mountain and sea terrain, making this a favorite route for travelers who enjoy photography and panoramic views. 5. Reflection Tower: After reaching the mountain area, visitors can continue to Reflection Tower, a well-known landmark and cultural site in the Mount Taiwu area. The surroundings are open, and it is often included as a midpoint or extension of the Doumen Ancient Trail itinerary. The area around Reflection Tower features granite terrain and trees, combining commemorative meaning with mountain scenery, and is one of the important photo spots on the Mount Taiwu routes. 6. Zheng Chenggong Watching Military Drills and Playing Chess Site (Yanping Junwang Chess Site): The trail ends at the Zheng Chenggong Watching Military Drills and Playing Chess Site, which is said to be the place where Zheng Chenggong once climbed Mount Taiwu to observe troop movements and play chess. It carries a strong sense of historical legend. The site contains related stone carvings and relics. It is one of the most representative cultural attractions in the Mount Taiwu area and the main destination for many travelers on the Doumen Ancient Trail.

Travel Tips
Doumen Ancient Trail is a short route with a noticeable incline, making it suitable for travelers with basic fitness and trail experience as a half-day outing or as part of an O-shaped loop with other Mount Taiwu routes. 1. Difficulty and Suitable Visitors: The route is about 1 kilometer long, but it climbs steeply throughout. The surface alternates between stone steps, soil, loose rock, and granite, making it more challenging than the front and back mountain trails on Mount Taiwu and not an easy casual walk. It is better suited to travelers who regularly walk or hike. Older visitors or those with weaker knees are advised to bring hiking poles, slow their pace, and go according to their ability. 2. Recommended Time and Route Combinations: A simple round trip on Doumen Ancient Trail does not take long, but if you add stops at Reflection Tower and the Zheng Chenggong Watching Military Drills and Playing Chess Site, it is best to reserve half a day for a more relaxed visit. It can also be combined with Caicuo Ancient Trail or other Mount Taiwu routes into an O-shaped hiking loop, allowing visitors to experience different historic trail scenery and military relics, which is ideal for those who enjoy mountain hiking. 3. Best Seasons and Time of Day: Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for hiking Doumen Ancient Trail due to cooler weather. Summer brings active ecology and the sounds of cicadas and birds, but the heat requires extra attention to hydration and sun protection. It is recommended to avoid the hottest part of the day and hike in the morning or afternoon. If you plan to catch sunrise or sunset on other Mount Taiwu trails, be sure to leave enough time for ascending and descending safely. 4. Gear and Safety: Because the trail includes granite bedrock and stone steps, it can become slippery after rain. Wear sports shoes or hiking shoes with good traction, and bring enough water and light rain gear. The route is mostly surrounded by natural forest, and mosquitoes are more common in summer, so insect repellent is useful. When walking on steep slopes and carved rock sections, watch your footing and avoid running or looking at your phone while walking. 5. Transportation and Other Reminders: The trailhead is located at the foot of Mount Taiwu near Doumen in Jinsha Township. Most visitors arrive by rental car, private car, or scooter, then start hiking from the trailhead. The mountain area has a complex terrain. If you are not familiar with the multiple routes on Mount Taiwu, it is best to plan your route in advance or follow the existing trail signs to avoid leaving the main path and getting lost.
Nearby Dining
The Doumen area of Kinmen is a village-and-farmland region, so before or after hiking you can return to the downtown areas of Jinsha or Jinhu to eat and try local Kinmen snacks and seafood. Combining this with a Mount Taiwu hike is a common one-day itinerary. If you are linking multiple Mount Taiwu trails into one trip, you can choose restaurants or tea shops near the village where you end your hike. Having lunch after descending from the mountain will feel more relaxed and comfortable.
