Overview

During the Japanese colonial period, there were three major government-run forest farms: Alishan, Basianshan, and Taipingshan, with Taipingshan being the later-developed one. Luodong Forestry Culture Park is the former site of the Luodong Branch Office and timber storage pond from the Japanese era. Since logging in Taipingshan ended in 1982, most of the area has remained in its original form. In 2004, the Yilan Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency planned the site as a forestry culture park and renovated it to combine forestry history, ecological sustainability, and design. In addition to restoring the park’s former forestry heritage, it also highlights the historical significance of Taipingshan forestry and Luodong’s urban development. In 2012, the park was officially registered as a cultural landscape under the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act under its old name, Luodong Forest Farm.

An open park surrounded by expansive greenery and ponds in downtown Luodong, Yilan County. It was formerly the Luodong Branch Office and timber storage pond of Taipingshan Forest Farm during the Japanese colonial period, and it preserves the historical scenery and forestry culture in full. As a place that bears witness to Taipingshan forestry development and Luodong’s growth, the park was registered in 2012 under its old name, Luodong Forest Farm, as a cultural landscape in accordance with the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act. It functions as a place for leisure walks, historical exploration, and ecological education.

What to See

1. Timberg pond and ecological pond area: The park’s most iconic water landscape, originally used as a timber storage pond after Taipingshan logging. Today, its broad water surface combines aquatic plant ponds and display areas, making it an ecological classroom for sightseeing and observing water birds and aquatic plants. 2. Forest railway and narrow-gauge railway features: The park preserves forest railway tracks and related facilities. Some sections of the narrow-gauge railway have been restored, allowing visitors to imagine the former transport scene of Taipingshan timber being carried to Luodong. The railway line is also a popular walking and photography route. 3. Steam locomotive display area: This area exhibits early steam locomotives and related equipment used for timber transport, reflecting the history of Taipingshan Forest Farm’s logging and timber shipping. It is a must-see photo spot for visitors interested in railways and industrial heritage. 4. Japanese-style dormitories and office buildings: The park still preserves a substantial group of Japanese-style wooden houses and former office buildings. These once housed thousands of forest-farm employees and their families, making the site an important place for understanding the look and feel of forestry settlements during the Japanese colonial period, with a strong nostalgic atmosphere. 5. Cultural exhibition hall and forestry history zone: This area is designed for forestry exhibitions and cultural interpretation, using texts, old photos, and tool displays to introduce the development of Taipingshan Forest Farm, timber transport and sawmill operations in Luodong Forest Farm, and the concept of forestry conservation. 6. Circling trail around the ponds and shaded walking spaces: The park has well-planned loop trails around the ponds and shaded paths, suitable for slow walks, jogging, and family stroller outings. Along the way, visitors can enjoy lake views, tree shadows, and bird activity, making it a rare large green space for relaxation in the city. 7. Travel Tips

1. Suggested visit time and route: It is generally recommended to allow about half a day for leisurely walking and taking photos. Visitors who want to closely view the exhibition hall, railway area, and Japanese-style dormitories may want to extend the visit to a full day. A common route is: entrance → timber pond and loop trail → forest railway and steam locomotive area → Japanese-style dormitory group → cultural exhibition hall. 2. Best season and time to visit: The park is suitable year-round. Spring and autumn are more comfortable for longer outdoor walks and photography. In summer, it is better to visit in the morning or during cooler afternoon hours, make use of the shade and lakeside rest areas, and stay hydrated. Cloudy or light rainy days also create a different atmosphere, with reflections on the water and misty scenery. 3. Clothing and gear recommendations: The park is large and mostly explored on foot, so light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking or casual shoes are recommended. You may also want to bring a hat, sunscreen, and rain gear, especially during Yilan’s rainy seasons. Photography enthusiasts may wish to bring a camera and a wide-angle lens to capture the ponds and railway scenery. 4. Family- and elder-friendly level: The trails are flat with gentle slopes, making the park suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. It is good for family walks and slow-paced visits by older adults. A shorter loop can be planned in advance, with more rest stops under trees or in pavilions. 5. Photo spots and check-in highlights: Recommended locations include the timber pond, the forest railway, in front of the steam locomotive, and the Japanese wooden dormitory group. Early morning or near sunset offers soft light and better reflections, making these the favorite times for photography lovers. 6. Use of interpretation and guided tours: If you want a deeper understanding of Taipingshan Forest Farm history, logging and timber transport processes, and changes in forestry culture, check whether the park offers regular guided tours, interpretation panels, or audio guides, subject to on-site or official announcements. You can also look up activities at the Luodong Nature Education Center in advance. 7. Pairing with nearby attractions: You can combine the park with Luodong Night Market, Luodong Sports Park, or Dongshan River Water Park in the same day. It is well suited to self-drive trips or public transport combined with walking. 8. Transportation and parking reminder: The park is located in Luodong city center, so it is convenient to reach by walking, bicycle, or public transportation. If driving, be aware that parking lots may close around evening or that parking spaces may be limited. Try to avoid peak hours and follow local parking regulations. 9. Environmental and ecological protection: Because the park serves both as an ecological pond and a habitat area, visitors are advised not to feed wild birds or fish, not to break branches or pick plants, and to take their trash with them in order to keep the water and trails clean. 10. Weather and safety notes: On rainy days or shortly afterward, paths and wooden boardwalks may be slippery, so please watch your step. During summer, if you spend a long time outdoors, bring mosquito repellent, drink enough water, and avoid heat exhaustion.
