Overview

The golden beach in front of Donglin Coastal Park was once, like all beaches in Kinmen, covered with landmines and anti-landing obstacles. As cross-strait tensions eased, those military defenses were removed. Today, this high-quality golden beach on the southeast coast of Donglin Settlement is a great place for visitors to enjoy the sea and walk along the waves, with clean, unpolluted surroundings that have made it one of Little Kinmen’s major attractions.

Highlights

Donglin Coastal Park is a seaside scenic park known for its golden fine sand and the nickname “Little Kinmen’s Golden Coast.” It combines wave-watching, family-friendly recreation, and a leisurely island setting for walking and relaxation. The park faces a quartz-sand bay stretching from Donggang Cape to Luocuo Cape, with fine sand and expansive sea views. Once a battlefield covered with landmines and military installations, it has now been fully cleared and turned into a clean, unpolluted, safe beach and an important Little Kinmen landmark. Covering about 3 hectares, the park includes observation platforms, a sculpture plaza, a fitness area, and a children’s play zone, making it suitable for strolling, sea viewing, listening to the waves, and family outings. Visitors can also look out over the Kinmen-Lieyu waters and the surrounding scenery of lakes and mountains.

What to See

1. Golden quartz-sand beach: The golden beach is the core attraction of Donglin Coastal Park. Its fine, clean, unpolluted sand is ideal for barefoot wading, walking, and taking photos. The crescent-shaped bay, about 1,600 meters long, shines in the sunlight. With the battlefield traces of landmines and anti-landing obstacles long gone, it has become an excellent place for relaxed seaside enjoyment. 2. Scenic bay of Little Kinmen’s Golden Coast: The bay stretching from Donggang Cape to Luocuo Cape has graceful contours and is known as “Little Kinmen’s Golden Coast.” With sea and sky blending into one line and wide open views, a walk along the coastal trail offers blue sea, blue sky, and the curving shoreline, along with the island atmosphere brought by the sea breeze. 3. Observation platform and landmark tower: The park includes elevated facilities such as an observation platform and a landmark tower, allowing visitors to climb up and overlook the entire golden beach and the Kinmen-Lieyu waters. Viewing the shoreline curve from above, or watching the sunrise and afternoon sea scenery, makes this an ideal spot for photography and sightseeing. 4. Sculpture plaza and animal sculptures: The sculpture plaza and trail sculpture area feature many marine and bird-themed statues, including sea otters, ring-necked pheasants, horseshoe crabs, white storks, dolphins, crabs, and king penguins. These lively installations add a playful and educational touch to the otherwise tranquil coast, making them especially popular with families and great for photos. 5. Children’s play area and fitness zone: The park includes a children’s play area and fitness facilities, giving children room to play while adults stretch and exercise. Combining seaside scenery with recreational space, it is a relaxing venue for family trips, group activities, and slow-paced walks. 6. Rest pavilions and coastal trail: The park has scenic rest pavilions and walking paths, making it easy for visitors to rest, enjoy the view, and chat after wading in the surf. Benches, pavilions, and landscaping create a leisurely atmosphere, where one can listen to the waves and enjoy an island afternoon. 7. Surrounding scenery and the transformation from a battlefield atmosphere: Donglin Coastal Park is near Xishan Lake and offers distant views of the Yangshan Recreation Area, creating a layered landscape of lake, mountain, and sea. A coast that was once covered with landmines has become an open seaside park. For travelers interested in battlefield history, it is also a symbolic place that reflects Kinmen’s transformation from military frontline to tourism island.

Travel Tips

1. Best seasons and times to visit: Late spring through autumn is usually the most comfortable time to visit Donglin Coastal Park, making it ideal for wading, walking, and outdoor activities. Early morning and late afternoon offer softer light and cooler temperatures, which are better for photography and longer stays. Summer midday sun is strong, so sun protection and hydration are important. 2. Sun protection and beach gear: Because the park is by the sea, sunlight and sea breeze are both noticeable. It is recommended to bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a light jacket, especially in summer or during long beach activities. If you plan to wade in the water, sandals or flip-flops are convenient for moving between the sand and the paths. 3. Tips for families with children and elderly travelers: The park’s children’s play area and fitness facilities make it suitable for family outings, but seaside activities still require attention to children’s safety. Avoid letting children go near deep water or rip-current areas alone. Elderly companions may prefer to rest more often at the pavilions and observation platforms and adjust walking distances according to their physical condition. 4. Transportation and route planning: Donglin Coastal Park is in Lieyu Township and not far from the local Victory Gate. It can be reached by bus, private car, or rental vehicle, then entered on foot following the signs. If you are starting from Greater Kinmen, you will first need to arrange transportation to Little Kinmen (Lieyu) before continuing to Donglin. It is recommended to combine nearby attractions into a same-day itinerary to improve travel efficiency. 5. Photography and equipment protection: Sea breeze and sand can easily get into cameras, phones, and other devices, so protective cases or dust bags are recommended when taking photos. After use, a quick wipe is helpful. The shoreline curve, sculptures, and golden beach are especially photogenic during sunset and blue hour. 6. Environmental protection and etiquette: Donglin Coastal Park is known for being clean and unpolluted, so visitors are encouraged to bring their own trash bags and take waste with them or dispose of it in designated bins. Avoid leaving plastic, glass, or cigarette butts on the beach. When wading or playing in the water, pay attention to safety signs, and do not damage the sculptures or public facilities so the coastal landscape can be preserved for the long term.

Guoxing Well is located in Xiatian Village. More than 300 years ago, Zheng Chenggong led his troops to land on Little Kinmen and came to the Xiatian area. Wu Xiucai Residence

烈嶼鄉 · Historic Sites

Located in the Shangku settlement of Shangqi Village, Wu Xiucai Residence is the largest traditional courtyard house on Lieyu Island. It was built in the 20th year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing dynasty by Wu Jingshan, who became wealthy through shipping and salt production in Shangku. The residence is a large three-bay courtyard with two successive halls and symmetrical left and right guardian wings. After Wu Jingshan’s fifth-generation descendant, Wu Yushan, passed the imperial licentiate examination in the late Guangxu reign, a study room and school were set up in the forecourt to provide free education for local children. This earned the admiration of neighbors, who came to call the Wu family mansion the “Xiucai Residence,” a name that has continued ever since.
