Overview

In Greater Kinmen, people are familiar with the Wind Lion God; in Lesser Kinmen (Lieyu), however, there are two highly distinctive local symbols for warding off wind and evil — the North Wind Lord and the Wind Rooster. Although both are folk beliefs that protect against natural disasters, they differ independently in origin, appearance, and function, together forming Lieyu’s unique religious landscape.

Guoxing Well

烈嶼鄉 · Historic Sites

Guoxing Well is located in Xiatian Village. More than 300 years ago, Zheng Chenggong led his troops to land on Little Kinmen and came to the Xiatian area. Exhausted by battle and travel, and unable to find drinking water, Zheng Chenggong — also known as Koxinga — pointed his sword at the ground and ordered his soldiers to dig where he indicated. Soon after, a clear, sweet spring water began to gush forth and has never run dry. Villagers came to honor it as Guoxing Well. Clear spring water still flows here today, and visitors are welcome to draw water.

The Donglin East Well in Donglin Settlement, Lieyu Township, was excavated in 1204 during the Song dynasty by Lin Yanzhi and has a history of more than 800 years. It is the largest ancient well in Kinmen and is notable for its unusual construction. In 2004, as part of rural redevelopment, steps and a granite-paved surface were added around the well, and an stainless-steel protective frame and transparent glass were installed above it. It is designated as a county-level historic site.

The area features rich intertidal ecosystems, and expansive oyster farms appear at low tide. Donglin Coastal Park

烈嶼鄉 · Nature & Scenery

The golden beach in front of Donglin Coastal Park was once, like all beaches in Kinmen, covered with landmines and anti-landing obstacles. As cross-strait tensions eased, those military defenses were removed. Today, this high-quality golden beach on the southeast coast of Donglin Settlement is a great place for visitors to enjoy the sea and walk along the waves, with clean, unpolluted surroundings that have made it one of Little Kinmen’s major attractions.
