Overview

The Fuguodun settlement is located at the easternmost tip of Kinmen Island. After passing through a traditional historic village, visitors can reach the shore and see some remaining military fortifications. The coastline here is a rocky shore, where uplifted granite forms a steep slope. Its elevated position made it especially suitable for watch posts. To defend against enemy landings, the rock slope is lined with agave plants whose leaves have serrated edges, along with broken glass bottles fixed into the rocks with concrete, creating a sharp, blade-like slope.

Highlights

Fuguodun Observation Deck is located at the easternmost tip of Kinmen Island and combines wartime relics with coastal scenery as a place to enjoy the sea. Along the way, you can pass through traditional villages and a granite shoreline while taking in expansive ocean views and Wuitou Bay across the water. It is a popular spot for watching sunrises, sunsets, and experiencing the atmosphere of a military frontier. The site preserves former military defenses such as heavily planted agave and the glass-shard ‘blade slope,’ bringing a strong sense of history into the natural landscape. In recent years, a wooden boardwalk, viewing platform, and a giant crab installation have been added, making it especially distinctive for photography and well suited to travelers who enjoy scenic walks and landscape photography.

What to See

1. Fuguodun Observation Deck and boardwalk: Fuguodun Observation Deck sits on high ground formed by uplifted granite, offering a commanding view of the sea and offshore scenery such as Beiding Islet. The outlook is wide open, and on clear days the horizon where sea and sky meet is especially impressive. A wooden boardwalk runs along the coast, winding beside the rocky shoreline and preserving the natural terrain, making it ideal for a leisurely seaside walk and for photographing portraits and landscapes. 2. Agave defense line: On the rocky slope, you can clearly see a broad stretch of agave with serrated leaf edges. In the past, it was regarded as a ‘plant soldier,’ using its spiny leaves to block enemy landings. This is a unique defensive landscape of Kinmen. Today, it has become part of the island’s wartime scenery, blending strikingly with the coastline and cliff faces. 3. Glass ‘blade slope’ wartime relic: To prevent enemy frogmen from launching surprise attacks from the sea, soldiers in the past broke glass bottles and fixed the shards onto the rocky slope with concrete, creating a sharp ‘blade slope’ or ‘glass blade hill.’ This kind of man-made defensive terrain is quite rare in Kinmen. Some of the glass has since disappeared through weathering, so the remaining traces are even more precious and worth observing closely for their historical meaning. 4. Traditional village and old-house atmosphere: The route to Fuguodun Observation Deck first passes through a traditional village area, where Minnan-style historic houses and old residences gather, reflecting the appearance of an early fishing and farming community. A stroll through the area reveals the simple atmosphere of Kinmen’s eastern end, in strong contrast to the nearby military structures. 5. Fuguodun Fishing Harbor and artificial bay: The Fuguodun area was developed by connecting exposed reefs and land through reclamation, forming an artificial-bay fishing harbor and one of Jinhu’s important fishing bases. Around the harbor, you can see boats and breakwater scenery, complemented by red earth layers and granite-gneiss terrain, showing two very different coastal landscapes. 6. Giant crab installation and painted wall: Near the observation deck stands a giant ‘spicy crab’ installation artwork with a realistic, clawing pose, symbolizing Kinmen’s abundance of flower crabs and becoming a must-photograph landmark for visitors. At the entrance to the attraction, a large painted wall combines marine and military imagery, making it a good spot for souvenir photos.

Travel Tips

Fuguodun Observation Deck can be visited year-round, but if you want to see the sunrise over the sea or a golden sunset, autumn and winter or clear, mist-free days are recommended for better visibility and more beautiful light and shadow. In the early morning and at dusk, the sunlight is softer, which makes portrait and seascape photos especially appealing. The area is exposed to strong coastal winds, so bringing a light jacket or windproof clothing is recommended, especially in autumn and winter or during cool mornings and evenings. The rocky shoreline and some sections of the path may be slippery, so non-slip athletic shoes or walking shoes are safer and more comfortable than sandals or slippers. Wartime relics and steep slopes are still visible in the Fuguodun area. When viewing the glass ‘blade slope’ and the agave defense line, please keep your distance and do not climb or touch them to avoid cuts or slips and to help protect these valuable relics. Staying on the boardwalk and established paths is the safest way to enjoy the scenery. Because there is little light pollution here, visitors coming at night for stargazing or sea views should bring a flashlight or headlamp and watch their footing and surroundings. In summer, sun protection, a hat, and plenty of drinking water are recommended, and the hottest midday hours should be avoided. The attraction is in the Fuguodun area of Jinhu Township, and most travelers arrive by scooter or car. It is a good idea to confirm navigation using ‘Fuguodun Observation Deck’ or nearby checkpoint and fishing harbor locations. Parking is mainly available in nearby open spaces and parking areas, and during peak seasons it is wise to allow extra time for driving and finding a parking spot.

Nearby Dining

The area around Fuguodun Observation Deck is centered on the fishing harbor and settlement, so dining options are not as dense as in the city center, but there are still a few seaside eateries and restaurants nearby. Restaurants close to the sea often serve seafood and set meals, while some specialize in steak or Western-style combo meals, making for a relaxing dining experience with an ocean view. If you plan to stay longer, you may wish to eat first in Jinhu town or in the Shanwai area, then head to Fuguodun for a seaside walk, or bring light snacks and drinks for a simple picnic near the observation deck or boardwalk. During peak travel periods or holidays, it is advisable to check opening hours in advance and make reservations to avoid disappointment.
