Highlights
Maoshan Pagoda is the most prominent stone pagoda among Kinmen’s three major ancient pagodas, and it is an excellent vantage point for overlooking Kinmen Harbor, the cityscape of Jincheng, and the sunset over the sea. From the viewing platform near the pagoda, visitors can enjoy the full view of the Kinmen Harbor Passenger Service Center, Jincheng urban area, Houfeng Harbor, Genggong Islet, and the sunset at the mouth of the Wujiang River, combining history, culture, and natural scenery. Set on a coastal hill in the southwestern corner of Kinmen Island, Maoshan Pagoda has served as a maritime marker and landmark since the Ming Dynasty and remains one of the important attractions for visitors to Jincheng and Shuitou.
What to See
1. The pagoda itself and its hexagonal stone form: Maoshan Pagoda is a hexagonal stone tower built from granite, narrower at the top and wider at the base. Its layered structure and gourd-shaped finial give it a simple yet stately appearance that reflects Ming Dynasty stone pagoda architecture. Up close, visitors can appreciate the texture of the stone and the tower’s proportions, and experience the atmosphere of “standing atop the tower to gaze in all directions, filled with nostalgic sentiment.” 2. Views from the Maoshan Pagoda observation deck: From the viewing platform beside Maoshan Pagoda, visitors can look down on the nearby Kinmen Harbor Passenger Service Center and see Jincheng urban area and Houfeng Harbor in the distance. The offshore islet Genggong Islet is also clearly visible. In good weather, the sea and sky blend into one, creating a striking harbor scene that is a popular angle for photographing Kinmen Harbor, the city skyline, and the sea. 3. Sunset scenery at the mouth of the Wujiang River: At dusk, looking out from Maoshan Pagoda toward the mouth of the Wujiang River reveals a golden-red sunset sinking into the sea. The water where river and sea meet becomes especially beautiful in the fading light, making this a recommended time for photography and leisurely walks. The sunset framed by the silhouette of the ancient pagoda is also ideal for memorable photos. 4. Kinmen Harbor Passenger Service Center and harbor scenery: Overlooking the Kinmen Harbor Passenger Service Center from Maoshan Pagoda allows visitors to observe harbor facilities, ship movements, and the surrounding coastline, offering a glimpse of Kinmen’s modern role as a maritime transportation hub. The curved harbor line and the outline of distant towns form an expansive view that blends culture and nature. 5. Surrounding trails and coastal scenery (based on general impression): The trails leading to Maoshan Pagoda are mostly gentle steps and walking paths, and some sections offer views of beaches and the coast, making them pleasant for a short walk. With greenery and sea breezes along the way, the approach to and departure from the pagoda adds a comfortable outdoor experience to the visit.

Travel Tips
The best time to visit Maoshan Pagoda is on a clear day with good visibility, especially around sunset, so you can enjoy both the harbor scenery and the sunset at the mouth of the Wujiang River. Wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers, as getting to the pagoda area involves steps and trails, and non-slip soles are safer. The pagoda area and viewing platform are open-air spaces, so strong summer sun and the stronger northeastern monsoon in autumn and winter make a sun hat, light jacket, and windproof gear advisable. Maoshan Pagoda is close to the Kinmen Harbor Passenger Service Center and attractions in Jincheng and Shuitou, so a half-day to full-day walking or self-drive itinerary can combine Shuitou Settlement, Genggong Islet, and Jincheng Old Street. If you enjoy photography or aerial photography, allow extra time to capture changing light and the blue-hour period around sunset. Travelers should check the day’s weather and visibility in advance to avoid fog or rain affecting the views.
Nearby Dining
Maoshan Pagoda is not far from the Kinmen Harbor Passenger Service Center and Jincheng town center, so before or after your visit you can head to Jincheng or the Shuitou area for food, including local snacks and simple meals such as traditional noodles, Minnan-style dishes, and a variety of Kinmen specialty foods. Since the pagoda area is mainly a scenic historic site, the nearby surroundings are focused on walking trails and natural scenery, so it is recommended to eat in the town center first or bring drinking water and light snacks before going up to enjoy the view. The dining options around Jincheng are diverse, making it a suitable stop for lunch or dinner on a day trip.
